The instructor said,

Go home and write
a page tonight.
And let that page come out of you---
Then, it will be true.

I wonder if it's that simple?
I am twenty-two, colored, born in Winston-Salem.
I went to school there, then Durham, then here
to this college on the hill above Harlem.
I am the only colored student in my class.
The steps from the hill lead down into Harlem
through a park, then I cross St. Nicholas,
Eighth Avenue, Seventh, and I come to the Y,
the Harlem Branch Y, where I take the elevator
up to my room, sit down, and write this page:

It's not easy to know what is true for you or me
at twenty-two, my age. But I guess I'm what
I feel and see and hear, Harlem, I hear you:
hear you, hear me---we two---you, me, talk on this page.
(I hear New York too.) Me---who?
Well, I like to eat, sleep, drink, and be in love.
I like to work, read, learn, and understand life.
I like a pipe for a Christmas present,
or records---Bessie, bop, or Bach.
I guess being colored doesn't make me NOT like

So will my page be colored that I write?

Introduction
Langston Hughes was very brave for his time. As a person, he grew up in an era that fiercely
subjugated the black race. Theme for English B is an obvious jab at the inequality that he saw all
around him at the time. He chose not to fit into the skewed status quo. Rather, he uses poetry to
take part in the Harlem Renaissance actively. The Renaissance was a movement that saw black
writers and artists use their creativity to challenge the discriminative society that they lived.
Almost all of them lived in New York City, and their contributions to the civil rights movement
cannot be understated.
Hughes takes the persona of a young African-American student. He uses the poem to
show how the pupil’s inner conflict reflects on the identity of African-Americans in the struggle
for social equality. The poem was published in 1949. By that time, Langston Hughes was a wellknown poet. Therefore, it is illogical to say that the work was his piece-de-resistance. One can
see that the thematic concepts move above and beyond a mere distance between an AfricaAmerican student and their Caucasian professor. The poem speaks to anyone who is having an
identity crisis and needs the benefit of another person’s experience to find him or herself in a
conflicted world.
