Pros and Two Cons of the Recommendation that the US Should Not Intervene in the Balkans
Pros/Strengths: Firstly, the US does not have a strategic interest in the Balkans civil war.
In order for the endless national war not to replace the cold war, there is a need for the west to
enact the view that ethnic purity cannot be the cause for national sovereignty anymore. Secondly,
if the United States does not intervene in the Balkans, then the country’s relationship with Russia
will not be strained.
Cons/weaknesses: if the United States follows the recommendation of not intervening in
the Balkans, then there may be an outbreak of war which will spread outside the country and
have far reaching effects since it will not be civil war anymore. In addition, if the US does not
intervene, the ‘ethnic cleansing’ which will result in a crisis where the Balkans may never know
peace.
