The central theme being analyzed by the author is that of competition and strategic direction of
a given organization. The book clearly outlines the importance of understanding and training the
strategies that can enable corporate leaders to win in this competitive market economy. The
broadest wisdom in guiding a successful business is beyond simply understanding the question:
Is your business important? The strategist's author, the leader of his business needs, Cynthia A.
Montgomery, entertains his audience with this simple but complicated research. In addition, he
continues to ask his readers: "If today we close the doors, your customers are going to suffer a
real loss. How long it takes and how difficult it would be, because they found another company
that can respond to those needs, as well as he did "(Montgomery, page 7).
What Montgomery tries to get out of his audience is not the typical intellectual
understanding of strategy, but his ability to respond to a rather satisfied cognitive question: Are
you a strategist? Among the many lessons taught by Cynthia Montgomery in this book, the main
message that is conveyed through is how you can become a strategist with a purpose.
The strategist is not written like a strategic book; rarely are books written to teach
someone how to become a strategist. We see books that tell us how to cook some dishes with
recipes, but what really matters in the long run and more success is the one that shows how he
becomes a good cook; a person can formulate his own recipes. Montgomery tells everything
about his experience and knowledge during his five years of teaching in a comprehensive
program known as EOP (entrepreneurs, owners and presidents) at the Harvard Business School.
It touches heavily on thinking strategies such as the SWOT analysis, a value creation system by
Gucci and Michael Porter Five competitive forces that shape strategy. The strategist is ultimately

the Montgomery analysis through the investigation of facts and observations which conclude
with what makes a winning quarterback.
A great strategist has formulated not just ways for a company to make a profit but
