Leadership Domains Assessed by the ACHE Assessment Tool
The American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Healthcare Executive
Competencies Assessment Tool is an instrument offered to healthcare executives for
assessing their expertise in healthcare management critical areas. The domains are
obtained from the Healthcare Leadership Alliance (HLA) Competency Directory. They
are a subset of competencies applicable to leadership and management that are
expected of affiliates of American College of Healthcare regardless of their experience
of work setting (Robbins, Bradley, Spicer, & Mecklenburg, 2001). The self-assessment
helps identify areas of strengths and others that require personal development. The
competency assessment tool is powerful to facilitate gaps in skills that are needed in
optimizing performance (Robbins, Bradley, Spicer, & Mecklenburg, 2001). The ACHE
assessment tool can be useful when defining requirements for various roles in an
organization. The implication is that an organization can respond with a specific training
and development.
Within the ACHE assessment tool, the domains are categorized into five:
Communication and Relationship Management, Professionalism. Leadership,
Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment and Business Skills and Knowledge
(Robbins, Bradley, Spicer, & Mecklenburg, 2001). Communication and Relationship
Management is the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner with external
and internal customers. Further, this entails creating and maintaining relationships.
Moreover, this domain includes facilitating constructive interactions among individuals
and groups. The second domain, Leadership, includes the capacity to inspire

excellence among individuals and within the organization (Robbins, Bradley, Spicer, &
Mecklenburg, 2001). Leadership also is creating a shared vision and the ability to
successfully manage change for achieving strategic objectives. The third domain is
professionalism. It is the ability of aligning personal and organizational conduct with
standards of ethics and professionalism (Robbins, Bradley, Spicer, & Mecklenburg,
2001). These comprise of the responsibility of taking care of a patient and the
community, being service orientated and committed to improvement and lifelong
learning. Knowledge of the Healthcare Environment is understanding of the
environment within which the healthcare system operates. Business Skills and
Knowledge comprise the ability of applying principles of business to the healthcare
environment (Robbins, Bradley, Spicer, & Mecklenburg, 2001).
Strategies to Develop the Identified Strengths and Weaknesses for Each of
the Five Domains.
Individuals and businesses use the self-assessment tool to pinpoint areas of
strengths and personal development. Organizations can also conduct surveys of
employees to develop activities for training and development. On an organizational
capacity, the assessment tool can be a framework for identifying leadership skills and
