Ch. 19 - Poverty, Population, and the Environment

This chapter of the textbook revolves around worldwide poverty levels and their impact on environmental quality. The majority of the world's population is impoverished, and thus they have a large role to play in the move toward a sustainable existence on Earth. Without money, people do not have the time or resources to consider the environmental impacts of their activities. Their lifestyles are typically not "green" as they scour their immediate surroundings and wring the nearby land dry of nutrients in order to sustain their lives. The activities of life in impoverished regions can often lead to localized environmental degradation. Scaling outward, impoverished countries are also still typically caught up in environmentally-harmful industries. This includes heavy reliance on manufacturing and mining, which generate income but simultaneously generate pollution. While struggling to get by and generate any profits possible, industries in these countries are not concerned with the environmental impact of their activities.

Intimately tied with poverty is the population issue. Poverty tends to promote high birth rates due to high infant mortality rates and the economic insurance of having many children. In the face of an exploding population due to high poverty rates around the world, strategies have emerged to lower the birth rate and raise the standard of living for all. One strategy is in education - by promoting and proliferating education, children will have more opportunities to make money for the family, thus reducing the need to have many children. The introduction of effective health care to impoverished countries is another way to go about this issue, for lower infant mortality rates will reduce a family's need to keep trying for more children. Other strategies include redistributing land to small farmers so as to put a larger percentage of the population to work, as well as redistributing wealth from the wealthy to the poor in general.

I find it fascinating and promising that an approach to mitigating climate change is to raise the standard of living for the entire population. Though far-fetched in our individualistic cultures of the west, if we were able to expand our compassion to all humans around the globe and make concerted efforts to share the wealth, we would simultaneously be making everyone better off financially and improving the well-being of our planet. Though it sounds cliché, it gives me hope that with a collective and compassionate mindset, we have the power to make the world an overall better place.

Question: With that in mind, is such a vision of widespread financial well-being feasible, or is it wishful thinking? How do we possibly go about turning the selfish nature of western capitalism into global compassion and concern for other people and the environment?

2.Poverty, Population and the Environment - Ch. 19

While poorer countries are generally not contributing to large scale environmental harm, they are frequently handed the short stick as far as environmental safety. They are generally exposed to unsafe drinking water, inadequate sewage facilities and indoor air pollution. This is primarily due to the fact that people in poverty can not afford to conserve natural capital or demand for safer, pollution free environments. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) describes the reason for environmental harm in impoverish places. It states that when economic growth occurs, certain types of population problems get worse before they get better. While more impoverish countries are suffering from environmental harm and acting unsustainably, richer nations produce significantly more pollution due to our ability to consume.

The remainder of the chapter focuses more on population. Population growth poses potential problems for the environment but they have been avoided through agricultural revolution and innovation. In places of poverty, birth rates tend to be higher due to a lack of contraceptives or because children offer economic insurance and income supplements. In order to counteract the rising population, methods such as redistribution of income or land, reduced infant and childhood mortality, more access to education and female empowerment and even a one-child policy have been used. There aren’t currently rules regarding to coal ash in the EPA, the waste disposal tends to fall on communities with high levels of poverty because they lack the financial resources needed to ensure cleaner and safer environments.

What is the best way for us to combat this issue? Which policy making tool would be the best remedy for this infringement on human rights? Specifically in regard to low income communities being subject to poor environmental standards without consent.

POVERTY, POPULATION, AND THE ENVIRONMENT

The material included here discusses the concepts of poverty, population, and the
environment. The materials also discuss the relationships that exist among these concepts. The
reading material is informative on the respective subjects, and the arguments are well matured
and supported. The issue of environmental degradation is a critical element in contemporary
times, especially now that there is population pressure. The latter occurs mostly in povertystricken regions since wealthy regions are likely to impl...
