Introduction
Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd is a multinational that specializes in providing networking
and telecommunications equipment and services. The company headquarters are in Shenzhen,
Guangdong, China. Founded in 1987 by a Chinese businessman and former engineer of the
People’s Liberation Army Ren ZHengfei, the company has grown to become the largest
telecommunications equipment manufacturer in the world after overtaking Ericson in 2012. The
company started with making phone switches but has developed into providing consulting and
operational services, building telecommunications networks, manufacturing cellphones, and
providing telecommunication and networking equipment to various enterprises across the world
(Nakai & Tanaka, 2010). As of September 2015, the company employed at least 170,000 people
with 76,000 of these individuals working for the research and development (R&D) department.
Approximately 80 percent of the top 50 telecommunications companies in the world have
worked with the Chinese multinational. These companies include Vodafone, BT, Bell Canada,
Motorola, PTCL, Orange, and T-Mobile. The company won a huge contract with the largest
telecom company in the UK, Everything Everywhere, on May 2011. This was the company’s
first mobile network contract with a UK-based company. The company’s products and services
are divided into three main segments, namely device manufacturing, telecommunications carrier
networks, and enterprise business where the company provides equipment, software systems, and
services, such as Government Solutions (Yu, & Zhang, 2010). Business ethics refer to applied
ethics that determine ethical principles and problems that revolve around a business
environment. Such ethics apply to all aspects of a business and are relevant to the behavior and
conduct of each member and the whole organization. As any other big company, Huawei
exhibits both positive and negative business practices.
