Assignment 2: Homeostasis

Post your assignment to the W5: Assignment 2 Dropbox for grading by the instructor by Saturday, July 29, 2017. The minimum length for this assignment is 1,500 words. Be sure to check your Turnitin report for your post and to make corrections before the deadline of 11:59 pm Mountain Time of the due date to avoid lack of originality problems in your work.

The maintenance of homeostasis is of major importance to all organ systems in the body and the overall survival of the individual. Explain how homeostasis is the maintenance of a dynamic range of environmental qualities rather than holding the internal environment at a set point. What would be wrong with a set point (say for body temperature) rather than a working range of temperatures?

The endocrine system is closely tied to homeostasis functioning. Give two examples of hormones (including their glands of origin and action) that play major roles in homeostatic processes in the body. What happens if these hormones are disrupted in their actions?

Also, look at how we adapt to survival in the outside world. Discuss how maintaining homeostasis gives us greater freedom of activity from dependence upon changes in the external environment. What happens during extremes that force our bodies out of homeostatic bounds? Give specific examples.

Why is the maintenance of homeostasis especially important during development of new humans within the bodies of their mothers? What can go wrong if specific homeostatic functions are disrupted?

Question 1(a)
The body of a human being has to maintain a range of environmental qualities for it to
function properly (Marieb and Hoehn, 2007).Homeostasis is the process through which the body
maintains its different components to the conducive levels for its normal functioning. The
environment that we live in is bound to change and these changes also have an effect on our
bodies. These effects need to be regulated so that they do not threaten the life of an individual
because if not regulated they could harm the normal working of the body resulting in death.
Some of the things that have to be regulated every now and then are body temperatures, blood
sugar content and calcium content. Homeostasis is therefore the metabolic that constantly seeks
to maintain the equilibrium of the body using different biological mechanisms that are controlled
by the central nervous system.
The body can function properly at a variety of environmental qualities instead of
allotment of the inside environment at a given fixed point. The reason why homeostasis is the
preservation of a vibrant range of ecological qualities instead of keeping the interior environment
at a set point, is because there is no fixed normal internal environmental quality. For example,
the temperature may be between 37.2 to 37.6 degree Celsius and this is still considered normal.
The blood sugar can range from a pH of 7.35 to a pH of 7.45 and this is considered normal
(Foyer and Noctor, 2005). This is the normal range that homeostasis seeks to maintain and as
such, homeostasis does not seek to hold the environment at a set point but at a range that is
conducive for the functions of the body.

Question 1(b)
As stated above, the environments we live in keep on changing and there is nothing
constant about them. Sometimes it is too hot and some hours later the temperature changes and it
is now too cold. These changes in the environment affect the internal environment of a human
being. If for example the temperature is too hot, the internal temperature also rises and when it is
too cold, the internal temperature lowers. If there was a set point it means that it would be too
risky...
