ASTR 1010L – Introduction to the Nighttime Sky Summary and Analysis Questions Construct a summary of the Introduction to the Nighttime Sky lab by discussing each of the following: • What motion do stars exhibit over the course of the night? Make sure to distinguish between stars that are circumpolar and those that are not. • Why do the stars seen in the sky change over the course of 24 hours? (Make sure to explain – this need more than just a two- or three-word statement.) • Why do the stars seen in the sky change over the course of a year? Your summary should contain three short-to-medium paragraphs (one for each of the bullet points above) and then answers to the following questions. It should be typed and uploaded to the Introduction to the Nighttime Sky Summary submission folder on iCollege. 1. Why is each person’s zenith a little bit (or a lot, if they are far away from you) different? 2. What makes Polaris special? 3. Sirius, also called the Dog Star, is the brightest star in the nighttime sky. (It’s fairly close to us, and it’s also inherently very bright – it gives off 25 times more light than our Sun does!) It is in the constellation Canis Major, or “Big Dog” – the larger of Orion’s two hunting dogs. Sirius can be seen low in the east after dark in early January. You can also see Sirius low in the eastern sky just before dawn in early August. Explain why this happens. If you want to include a sketch in your explanation, please either do it on the computer or scan/photograph your sketch and include it in your summary document.

ASTR 1010L – Introduction to the Nighttime Sky
Summary and Analysis Questions

What motion do stars exhibit over the course of the night? Make sure to
distinguish between stars that are circumpolar and those that are not.

Stars have their own motion through space and the stars are not fixed in the sky and instead they
are moving all the time. But the motion is very slow and cannot be noticed by naked eye. But if
we use precise instruments we can see that some stars appear to move back and forth relative to
other stars. The stars appear to follow the paths only from east to west across the sky.

Why do the stars seen in the sky change over the course of 24 hours? (Make sure to
explain – this need more than just a two- or three-word statement.)
