A crisis situation can bring people together because they are focused on a common goal and vision. Getting through the crises can give people a common ground which facilitates relationships. The need for everyone’s individual insight can increase collaboration. Trust develops as each member of the team relies on each other and sees the value of each individual.
When working with people we are bound to have experienced a negative reaction to or from individuals (Weiss, Tilin, & Morgan, 2014). When this happens we have defense responses that occur and this response is typically not conducive to situations we face or team effort or team building (Weiss et al., 2014). Misconceptions lead to group members feeling misunderstood and even marginalized and this leads to defensiveness and unproductiveness (Weiss et al., 2014).
Staff development improves rapport and trust in a department or group by helping group members to see individuals through a different lens and to see attributes of people in a more positive light (Weiss et al., 2014). Consistently positive interactions that occur in a group alleviate workplace stress, enable personal renewal, and lead to a team oriented culture (Weiss et al., 2014). When group members feel valued and accepted they invest in the work and outcome of a group. When team members learn to focus on common goals and vision they can gain and sustain vitality (Weiss et al, 2014). Learning to see your colleague’s value and to see their individual gifts and perspectives leads to trust and increased rapport.
