Drug Abuse and Addiction
Introduction
Drug abuse is the desire of a person to obtain and use any stimulant or narcotic substance
that has a psychological or physical effect when introduced into the body (Stimmel, 2014). The
substances may include cocaine, heroin, bhang, alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana. When
someone abuses drugs and tries not to continue using it without proper guidance, it may lead to
specific reactions like sweating, shaking, vomiting or pain in the body which stops when they
resume their intake. Drug abuse leads to addiction. The continuous act of consuming these
substances eventually affects the consumers or the people around them in a negative way.
Moreover, addiction has serious health implications. Therefore, it is imperative that people
understand drug abuse, its signs, its causes, its outcome and how to prevent drug abuse and
addiction.
Signs of Drug Abuse and Addiction
One sign of drug abuse and addiction is withdrawal from family members (Verster,
Brady & Galanter, 2013). A drug addict can prefer to be alone since he or she perceives the
substance they are addicted to as the only thing that matters to them. Drug addiction is what
makes them isolate themselves from their family. When they get addicted to drugs, they either
prefer being alone or associating themselves with people who are addicted to the same drug.
Moreover, others do not have the courage to face their family members and tell them about their
addiction. Withdrawal from family seems like their only option.
Consequently, a person being reckless with his or her grooming can also be a sign of drug
abuse and addiction. Drug addicts mostly tend to be unkempt (Verster, Brady & Galanter, 2013).
