COMM 131 Speech 3 – Special Occasion(3-4 minutes) Epideictic Oratory Special Occasion Speech: 3-4 minutes; outline. At some point in your life you will be asked to give a toast. As a student of COMM 131, you will you have the skills to give a toast without having your audience groan. You have the choice between giving a wedding/anniversary toast or a graduation/promotion/retirement toast. For this assignment, we will extend out the length of a typical “toast” (30 seconds), to a 3-4 minute tribute/commemorative style toast speech. The tribute must speak to one of the following contexts: wedding, anniversary, graduation, promotion, or retirement. If you are dying to toast to a different occasion, you must clear it with me first. You may use only ONE SIDE of ONE NOTECARD. Remember: Ceremonial speaking enables us to reinforce our group identities, to show admiration and respect, and to inspire others. Careful attention to language is key here. Making clear who you are toasting and your relationship to the “toastee” is VERY important ☺. Specifics: ❖ You will present a clear, organized, formal speech to the class by concentrating on the structure of your message, by developing a logical thought progression, and by using effective delivery techniques. ❖ No citations necessary – but be creative about cultural references or to whom you are raising a glass. CREATIVITY IS EVERYTHING! ❖ Since you are your own best visual aid when speaking, you must dress appropriately (we’ll discuss what that means). You can use props, but it is not required. ❖ An outline (in appropriate form) must be given to me right before you speak. This outline does not need a thesis statement but it must have a clear purpose statement. I will not accept late/untyped outlines, and you will lose all points pertaining to the outline if you fail to turn one in at the time you present. I will not accept emailed outlines. ❖ A topic, purpose statement, and title must appear at the top of your outline. Again, you’ll lose points if the outline is missing. ❖ You have thirty seconds grace (on the back end). If you violate the grace period you will lose one letter grade. ❖ You may use one side of one notecard. Your notecards must not be larger than 5” x 7” and must be handwritten. No sheets of paper may be used as notes. Your note cards should not contain your speech written out word for word…use key words and phrases. ❖ Note cards must be turned in after you speak. ❖ You do NOT have the option to complete a peer-critique for this assignment. ❖ A speech that is read WILL NOT receive a satisfactory grade. A speech that does not meet the basic minimum requirements will not receive a satisfactory grade (remember: speech competencies). ❖ Be sure to refer to your class notes on special occasion speeches, organization, introductions/conclusions, ethics and signpost to guide your preparation. If you come to class late and miss your spot in the speaking rotation, you may present only IF WE HAVE TIME, and for 50% reduced credit.
