Abstract
In today’s business environment no business can survive without the use of information
system. Management information system is the key to facilitate and attain high and
consistent performance for any business organization. The role of MIS in the business
environment has continued to evolve and it plays an integral part in business operations
particularly in decision-making process. This research aims at understanding the
effectiveness of management information system in enhancing the performance of
businesses in U.S. To conduct the study the research formulated hypotheses and a survey
designed to be the primary technique of data collection from organizations management
team. The study sample consisted of 110 respondents from organizations of different
sizes. The study used Z-test, mean and standard deviation to prove the hypotheses, to
analyze and discuss the results. The conclusion was that there was a positive relationship
between management information system with decision support system and the
improvement of business performance. The study concluded with recommendations that
will help in developing and improving the performance of businesses through the use of
MIS.
Key words: Impact; Management information system; strategic decisions; decisionmaking process

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF MIS ON BUSINESS PERFORMANCE

INTRODUCTION
MIS is the primary factor to facilitate and attain effective decision making in the
management of any organization. Organizations are in a constant race to enhance their
capacity to handle the competition in a highly globalized world of the 21st century.
Therefore, organizations are opting to enhance their agility by improving the decisionmaking process so that it is more effective and efficient to meet the fluctuations in the
market. To achieve consistent results most modern organizations in the 21st century have
focused their efforts on the progressive investments and have adapted the new
Management information system (MIS). Over the last decade, a large portion of the
financial organizations have used Management information system to improve their
services and speed up the adoption to facilitate further growth as the technology
continues to expand each day.
As whitten et al. (2004) stated that information is an arrangement of data, process, people
and information technology that interact with each other to process, store, collect and
provide the required output to support the organization. From the statement by Whitten et
al. (2004), it can be indicated that information system is an arrangement of data,
processes, groups, and technology that work together in unison to process, accumulate,
store and provide the required information output that is needed to speed up the decision
making process. For instance, in a banking system, there is the potential for a crisis which
may result in the lack of efficiency in the system, hence an advanced information system
that is supported by an organized and superior information system is required to make the
best decision according to the situation at hand. If the relevant information is not

available in organizational planning or decision-making process, then there is a high
chance that the decision made will be poor and inappropriate which will create defects in
the scheduling of operations and programming (Adebayo, 2007).
Information is the energy that powers organizations to be able to match the competition at
a local and global scale. The nature of competition and globalization in the market insists
on developing an organizational capability through an enhanced MIS. The stored
information must be retrieved when required and distributed to the organization for use
by the leadership team at the top level management and the mid-level management to
create effective long term and short term strategies. MIS is viewed as the technology that
provides the top management even the low management with the appropriate
information. MIS is based on collected data from external and internal sources to allow
them to make more effective and timely decisions that best suit the needs of the
organization to achieve the goals of the organization and satisfy the interests of
stakeholders (Argyris, 2015).
The concept of MIS attracts the attention of different professional from different fields
such as economics, management, political science, statistics and computer science
(Newman, 2001). However, the question that continues to prevail is what type of
information is to be used? How can different departments share the same information and
enhance the decision-making process to eliminate all possible errors.

This research paper will focus on how information management is a vital component
within an organization that is required to generate an effective plan and in making
decisions at the tactical level and strategic level of an organization.
Significance of research
Limited research has been done on how information is critical to the mid-level and
strategic level management that is effectively provided for by MIS. The limited research
done has encountered limitations and deficiencies in the research of MIS performance
and how it relates to the process of decision making in the organization (Knight Moore,
2005). The question on how management can use the information system to assist them
in decision making has constantly been raised as well as the question of how the top level
management team can enhance the MIS has been raised with little empirical investigation
and examination.
Purpose of research
The purpose of the research is to explore the extent to which MIS is used to make
effective decisions on short term and long term plans in different organizations. The aim
of the paper is to evaluate how MIS impacts performance within any organization.
The research organization
The paper is organized as follows. Section 2 and 3 will be on literature review and
methodology. Section 4, will present the results and analyze them. Section 5 will give a
discussion. Finally, the paper will be concluded in section 6 and recommendations made
in section 7.

LITERATURE REVIEW
There are a lot of techniques, approaches, and technologies used in the designing and
development of a Management information system. However, a few papers discuss the
impact of MIS on planning strategies and in decision making. While there is no single
definition of MIS and those that are already there are prejudices of the researchers. Lee
(2001) defines MIS as a process that seeks to provide information that is required to
manage organizations more effectively. Baskerville and Myers (2002) on the other hand
define MIS as the “development and application of information systems by either
organizations or the society.” In a study by Becta (2005), he describes information
system “as a system that consists of a network of communication channels that is used
within the organization.” In a study by Laudon (2013) they define MIS as the study of
information systems that is focused on their application in management and business in
general. All the definitions mentioned above show that MIS is an integral component in
developing models that will encourage quality work within the organization.
With reference to the literature, the field of MIS has expanded within a short time by
developing its theme of research (Baskerville & Myers, 2002). By tracing from the
previous literature, we can report that MIS is concentrated on the concepts of:
• Electronic data processing that carries data and stores it.

A management system that evaluates business operations and provides summaries and

feedback to the management.

Over the last two decades MIS has shifted is context to the primary which is the
instruction based which is often described as domain expert systems. In an attempt to
review published literature on MIS Alavi and Carlson (2012) identified a popular
research topic in MIS and that is the perspective and the relationship between MIS and
practice. To contrast the research Baskerville and Myers (2002) have studied MIS and
found that there is a shift in MIS research from the technical element to a managementsocial and technology-organizational focus.
Sykrius (2011) highlights that decision makers’ attitude towards the different factors that
affect business decision such as source of information, the analytical tools and the role of
information technologies affects the performance of any business. On the other hand
Handzic (2001) focus his attention on the impact of information availability on the
people’s ability to use it and process it to be applicable in short term and long term
decisions. Handzic (2001) also reveals that the more available the information is to the
management the better the impact on both the effectiveness and accuracy o...
