Kornbluh’s essay is about the issue of workplace flexibility that affects many employees
in the21st century. Kornbluh tackles the emergence of the ‘juggler family’ as a result of lack of
workplace flexibility. The essay is centered around the issue of lack of work flexibility and its
impacts on families and children at large. Kornbluh uses various strategies to dramatize the
problem. She provides abundant examples to dramatize the problem. For example, the annual
costs of a full-day care in the costs between $4,000 and $10,000 that is close to the cost of public
university is America. She also uses statistics to indicate the severity of the problem. For
example she quotes statistics that over 44.4 million Americans care for an older adult often a
relative. 59% of these caregivers have also to work while providing care for the relatives. In
2002, 45% employees reported that their work was often interfering with their family
responsibilities. At the same time, 67% working parents reported that they lacked enough time to
spend with their children due to their work. These results reveal disparity in family life due to
work. She also vividly describes the negative consequences of the problem. For example, many
children between the age of 6 and 12 stay at home alone after school because their parents are
working on tight schedule. Other children from low-earning families have to stay in poor care
settings due to the high costs of full-day care.
Kornbluh provides stepwise strategy for implementing workplace flexibility as the
solution to the problem. She provides the necessary steps required to implement the solution
without excessive costs and inconveniences. In her proposal Kornbluh identifies the importance
of a high-profile education crusade on the importance of workplace flexibility. After
implementation of workplace flexibility, a survey would be conducted after two years to
determine the efficiency of the stricter approach. In this approach, the employee would have the
right to request for work flexibility based on the hours worked, times worked as well as the
