THE VERSAILLES TREATY
Dear Citizens of the United States of America,
History has taught us all that our actions today have repercussions in the future and
the European power leaders and President Wilson had foreseen war and terror and tried to
come up with ways of ensuring global peace prevails. In an effort to prevent a replica of
World War I, the European Powers held Peace talks in Paris and came up with the Treaty of
Versailles. On the other hand, after realizing that the treaty was not effective enough to stop
war, President Wilson wanted to have the League of Nation in place to ensure peace
prevailed. The Treaty of Versailles signed in 1919 as part of the peace treaty aimed at ending
World War I, it aimed at bringing an end to the state of war between the Allied powers and
Germany (Beck, 2005). In Article 231 of the treaty, the German government was required to
disarm itself and make substantial concessions of what was termed as part of their territory.
Germany was also expected to pay a reparation cost that amounted to 132 billion marks
which is valued at $442 Billion in 2017.
The main goals of the treaty were to ensure that Germany took responsibility for
starting the war and paying for the losses and damages in form of the reparations. It was
aimed at revenging on the German government by disarming it and taking away its colonies
where the country was getting raw materials and revenue (Pederson, 2015). It was also aimed
at also controlling the Seas by monitoring the German ships and most importantly it brought
the World War I to an end.
The outcome was that German was weakened as it was expected to pay up the
reparations and disarm itself. Italy also gained most of the land from Austria Hungary and
that was a loss to Germany. France was also able to gain more control over the countries in
the Middle East as Germany lost the power and influence it had in those area. Unfortunately
