The destruction of the Great War (more popularly known as World War I) had greatly weakened
Europe, and due to unresolved issues, World War 2 had developed. Some of the issues are
related to political and economic instability in Germany, and persistent rejection to terms forced
on by the Versailles Treaty, which would make Adolf Hitler and his National Socialist (Nazi)
Party, rulers. In 1933 Hitler became Reich Chancellor and quickly joined control, anointing
himself supreme leader (Fuhrer) in 1934. Because Hitler was obsessed with dominance of the
“Aryan” or the pure German race, it was his opinion that war was the only way to get the space
to expand the race. In the mid-1930s he began the provision of Germany, secretly and in
violation of the Versailles Treaty. When the alliances were signed with Japan and Italy against
the Soviet Union, Hitler sent troops to occupy Austria in 1938 and the next year captured
Czechoslovakia. His open hostility went free, as the United States and Soviet Union were
focused on internal politics at the time, and neither France nor Britain (the two other nations
most devastated by the Great War) was enthusiastic for war.
By the late August of 1939, the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact was signed by Hitler and
Soviet leader named Joseph Stalin, which prompted a frenzy of worry in London and Paris. The
invasion of Poland was planned as the nation was in military support to Great Britain and France
if it was attacked by Germany. The pact with Stalin meant that Hitler would not face a war on
two fronts once he invaded Poland, and would have Soviet assistance in conquering and dividing
the nation itself. In 1939, on September 1, Hitler invaded Poland from the west; two days later,
France and Britain declared war on Germany, beginning World War II. On 17th day, Soviet
troops conquered Poland from the east. Poland fell quickly as they were attacked from both ends,
and by early 1940 Germany and the Soviet Union had shared control...
