and monitor the causes of death and injuries. ‘The international list of causes of death’ was the
first edition of international classification. It was adopted by the international statistical institute
in the year 1893. Later the World Health organization was chosen to create the international
classification of diseases and publish the 6th version of the classification that included morbidity.
Over time, member states have been using the latest and the current editions of the international

The international classification of diseases is the foundation that is used when identifying

standard that facilitates the reporting of diseases and the information about various health

The international classification of diseases defines all diseases, disorders, injuries and all
conditions that are related to health. Because of its hierarchical design, it allows for the easy
storage, retrieval and analysis of the information related to health to facilitate decision making
that is evidence based. It also assists hospitals, regions and countries to share and compare health
