Description

  • Recruitment and Placement (Job analysis & design should be part of this section)
  • Training and Development (Performance appraisal should be part of this process, as well as training new hires)
  • Compensation (This section should discuss the overall compensation plan and should show the relationship to job analysis & design, as well as performance appraisal)
  • Employee Health, Safety, and Security

The paper should be laid out in the following way:

  1. An introduction that gives a brief history and background of your company. (one to three paragraphs)
  2. A description of the current environmental forces that impact your company and, potentially, the HR practices.
  3. An in-depth analysis of each of the HR functions as detailed above. The analysis needs to include two parts:
    1. Give a detailed description of how each function is handled including who performs the various steps in the process.
    2. Using the information from the text and your own experience and previous knowledge, compile a comprehensive list with an in-depth discussion of the Strengths and the Weaknesses of each current process.
  4. An overall analysis and observations that identify the key strengths and weaknesses and their impact on organizational performance. (information taken from the analysis and the current situation)
  5. A recommendation on which practices or processes need to be changed to improve organizational effectiveness. (logically follows from all the previous information - you do not need to include a detailed program or implementation plan)

Introduction

According to Snell, Morris, & Bohlander, (2015), the human resource department is a
very critical department in organizations. Any organization that is very serious about achieving
maximum success must have a place for this unit. The department is responsible for performing
some of the major functions that are critical for the operation of companies. This paper focuses
on how the human resource department at the company which I work in conducts the functions
of recruitment, planning, training, development of employees, compensation and guaranteeing
employees' health, safety, and security. The company at which I work is Microsoft Corporation.
Microsoft is a multinational technology company that is widely known in the world for its
dominance in the computing industry. A brief history and background of the company go back to
its two founders, Bill Gates and Paul Allen, who have propelled the company to success since the
year 1975 (Jones & George, 2015). Some of the company’s best-selling products include
Microsoft windows, operating systems and Microsoft Office Suite. In the nineties, Microsoft
launched several versions that led to it covering of about 90% of the market share of world’s
personal computers.
Some of the environmental forces that have a high impact on the company ranges from
economic, to political and finally to technological environments. Economically, the personal
income, unemployment rates, and interest rates influence on the purchasing power of consumers.
Politically, the US Justice Department has consistently harassed the company with antitrust
charges claiming the company is stifling competition (Albrecht et al., 2015). Technologically,
the environment is full of competitors with compelling selling points highlighting the
vulnerabilities of the company’s products such as software.

Recruitment and Planning

The human resource department of the company is responsible for the critical processes
of training and planning. The department has over the years done and coordinated the operations
in a manner that I worth lauding. The recruitment process entails the advertisement of open
positions, interviewing of the applicants of the positions and hiring of the most suitable
applicants (Gatewood, Feild, & Barrick, 2015). The department has a panel of well-informed
interviewers who have years of experience in the exercise. Moreover, the interviewing panel
consists of not only experts in the positions being applied for but also psychologists who can
observe the interviewees keenly. The hiring of the employees is usually arrived at mostly by
merit and the confidence of the applicants.
Planning is another primary responsibility of the human resource department. It involves
many activities including making sure that all the departments have adequate staff, ensuring the
skills of the company match current organizational needs, creating a culture that promotes
business ethics and finding the correct team players who are committed to serving the company
through hard work and determination. The weakness that the corporation has, however,
concerning these functions is the limited diversity, especially in the recruitment process.
Planning is also a process that has proved to be very tedious and costly for the department.
Training and Development
It is solely the function of the human resource department of the company to train the
recruits. Training is a very fundamental process that acts as a transition process for the new
employees. The department conducts training partly by the publishing of training materials such
as handbooks which detail the aspects of the acquired job. This process helps the recruits to

point of conducting training is to change the attitude of the employees and improve their existing
skills or knowledge. During the process, human resource focuses on emphasizing the relationship
