Música Popular Brasileira
MPB shorts for Música Popular Brasileira is a popular music in Brazil which was
established in the 1960s and considered to have emerged from the natural evolution of the music
style Bossa nova (MPB). The core intention of this genre was to ensure that there would be a
continuous support and encouragement of keeping the music non-electric. It characterizes a trend
in modern music that goes back to typical Brazilian styles connecting them with influences from
other foreign styles such Jazz and Rock. In Brazil, MPB was a popular music with a generation
that started in 1965.
MPB is a hybrid of Bossa nova when many artist and other performers shifted from Jazzy
of the unique style and adopted traditional arrangement. MPB is used to recognize urban popular
music that is different from classical music but with an excellent outline of political arrangement,
to be differentiated from other imported music. The abbreviation does not mean a discrete style
but a practice of current standard music, usually sound and politically aware that distinguish it
from local version. MPB is currently used to refer to any music that originates from Brazil.
The Brazilian music is filled with the sound of the country’s history, the local people
before the settlers who arrived in the country played the original music of Brazil using various
instruments such wrestles, horns, sticks, drums, flutes and rattles (Pavao). The Brazilian sang

Música Popular Brasileira was first identified and became popular in the mid-1960s.
During this time, MPB was used to refer to all music that was not electronic music that followed
the Bossa nova type of music. During the rise of MPB, most artists, as well as audiences, were
learned people and students which made the music to be known as university music. MPB
emerged as an effort to come up with National Brazilian music. In 1964, MPB was used as an
instrument in politics during the error of dictatorship government in Brazil. The genre was used
by rebellious people who were against the military rule (Alberio). The lyrics of the song were
used to express political displeasure, social injustices, and folk culture.
The metaphor used in MPB songs was aimed to outsmart the military leadership. Since
most of MPB lyrics were provocative to the army regime, most of the artist was forced to escape
and live in exile for many years while some were arrested and others killed by the military
regime. The term MPB was firstly used in 1965 in competitions of traditional music, the
competition of song writings that were performed lively and displayed on the screen. During
these festivals, music with electric instruments was rejected by the audience. Notably, some of
the famous artists that made MPB to be known in public are still recognized up to date. An
example of such famous artist includes Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, and Gilberto Gil among
others (Rezende, p.34).
In early 1967, the MPB was altered by a musical revolution known as tropicalismo who
proposed the use of electric guitar in the music. The movement tried to remove the boundary
between the local and foreign music. Although some tropicalist songs contained non-traditional
elements, they were still categorized as MPB. The music is widely found in many places

music. However, the music is not played in places such as club and late bars.
In the 1970s, the real explosion of MPB music occurred due to the mixing of several music styles
whereby different new styles were discovered, and creativity blossomed. For instance, rock
music was mixed with MPB genre and broke the barrier that existed between the local and
foreign music.
Among the Brazilian artists, Gilberto and Caetano reinvented themselves, and this made
