Running Header: RESEARCH ESSAY: OUTLINE PREWRITE 1 Topic: Fable literary genre Thesis: When it comes to literary genres, fables started being written around 550 BCE, they grew into an extremely loved and evolved genre, and the biggest advantage for fables today is technology. I. The first historically documented fables were written around 550 BCE by Aesop who was a Greek slave. A. There were 725 fables in the book entitled Aesop's Fables and these fables were fictional stories intended to teach lessons. B. These fables usually involved animals or insects “in human-like situations (a belief known as animism)” (Horgan, 2014). C. Fables give hope to those that may not necessarily be emotionally strong and they also “served as a form of children’s’ entertainment beyond being a simple teaching tool” (Horgan, 2014). II. Fables grew in popularity as time went on and became one of the most loved genres of entertainment. A. In the past, even though only some parts of fables relate to real life, “people believed who believe in them, and these people were and are not much different from people today religions, miracles, cults, nations, and notions” (Zipes, 2012, p. 2). B. Fables use made-up situations, but they incorporate a lot of elements of real life. RESEARCH ESSAY: OUTLINE PREWRITE 2 C. An example of a very popular fable today is Spider-Man. The Amazing Spider-Man is a comic written by Stan Lee. It involved a fictional situation, but so much of the struggles that Spider-Man (aka. Peter Parker) dealt with are universal human struggles. III. Technological advances have completely heightened the effects of fables and lessened the level of difficulty involved in the creation of fables. A. In order to be relatable, a contemporary fiction fable needs to relate to the time period “because it fills an attentive reader with the inescapable feeling that what they are reading is, on some level, unbelievable” (Moraine, 2012). B. In reality, fables can be extremely easy to create because of 21st century technology. People do not need to use a pen and paper to write fables anymore. They can be written so quickly and easily. C. When fables started being created, the author had to really want to convey his or her ideas. When someone continually uses a pen and paper to write things obsessively, a painful condition called carpal tunnel can occur. RESEARCH ESSAY: OUTLINE PREWRITE 3 References: Horgan, J. FABLE LITERARY GENRE

Introduction

Fables are short fictitious stories that usually have two to three animal characters who
possess human abilities. They usually can talk, think and have emotions. They usually also
have a moral lesson at the end. They, therefore, teach various lessons. When it comes to
literary genres, fables started being written around 550 BCE, they grew into an extremely
loved and evolved genre, and the biggest advantage for fables today is technology.
Background of Fables
The historically documented fables were written around 550 BCE by Aesop who was
a Greek slave. It is however believed that these fables existed even before the Greeks did.
They were in form of the Sumerian proverbs that were written 1500 BC. These proverbs had
the same characteristics as Aesop's fables. They were not wordy, had animal characters and
were clear and precise. They also began with a situation than a moral lesson at the end. So it
is therefore believed that Aesop's contribution was to pass these fables to a different audience
in Greece where he lived. There were 725 fables in the book entitled Aesop's Fables and
these fables were fictional stories intended to teach a lesson. They involved animals and
insects "in human-like situations (a belief known as animism)" (Horgan, 2014). These
animals are like foxes, elephants, monkeys, and insects like the grasshoppers.
To be able to use these animals repeatedly, he avoided giving them permanent
characteristics like the greedy hyena. In this way, the animals could play any role in the
fables. These animals also acted like human beings, they thought and acted on these thoughts.
Fables’ mode of transmission was by word of mouth. Through this process, as time went by
the words and at times meanings were changed. Story-tellers did this so that their stories
could suit their circumstances or so that they could pass their intended message. There were
also different levels of understanding fables. The first one was getting the literal meaning.
