Energy Dependence and Sustainability Worksheet
Track your energy use in a day. Then, write a 75- to 150-word response to each of the following
questions:
1. How dependent are you on different types of energy to complete your daily activities? Which
type of energy do you use most?
Most activities I engage in involve the use of power. I depend on different
kinds of energy for various activities. For instance, I use gas energy for
cooking. Most of my laundry is done using the electricity obtained from
the nuclear power. Nuclear energy takes the major part in my power
consumption. I use the electricity generated from it for lighting, Ironing,
heating, sometimes for cooking. Electronic devices like television,
radio, and computers in my homestead rely on power. Nevertheless, the
office where I work relies on the same kind of energy to power the
machines. Without electricity, I believe life will be hard for me since I will
not be able to perform most of my daily activities.
2. Using your experience as typical, how dependent on energy is our society? Why?
Our society depends heavily on energy. From experience, almost every
activity in the homesteads and industries need a given form of energy to

exist. It is evident that our society is highly dependent on energy to
survive considering the rate at which the energy sources are depleting.
This leads to finding out new ways of increasing energy in the society.
The economy of our state relies on energy. Power is responsible for
propelling the machines in the industry used in the production
processes. For instance, without production, food and chemical
supplies will go down, and the community will suffer. This means that
the society depends either directly or indirectly to the energy available.
3. What types of energy are consumed in your state? How is this energy used?
The type of energy consumed in Georgia includes nuclear, coal,
hydroelectric power and natural gas. The nuclear power and coal are
used in the production of electricity which is used in the industries to
run machines for production. For the generation of electricity using
nuclear, the nuclear plants use steam and heat to produce electricity.
Through fission due to the splitting of uranium atoms, steam which is
used in powering the turbines responsible for energy produced is made.
4. What percentage of electricity in your state is generated by nuclear power?

From statistics, approximately twenty-six percent of the state’s electricity
comes from the existing four nuclear reactor units. However, with
planning, two more nuclear reactor units will be added at the Vogtle
nuclear power plant which is located in Burke County, Georgia. This will
increase the amount of power obtained from nuclear reaction in the
state. The two plants which were approved by the Nuclear Regulatory
commission in 2012 are supposed to be operational in 2019 and 2020
(U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2017).
5. Do you think nuclear power is a sustainable energy source? Why?
I think nuclear power is a sustainable source of energy. First, nuclear
energy relieves the state from relying on other states for electric supply.
We have our own source and no need to be dependents. Nuclear power
reduces carbon emissions to the atmosphere unlike other energy
sources like coal and gas. This is crucial since it helps to minimize the
depletion of the ozone layer which results in global warming. For

instance, fossil fuels and coal emit gasses which are harmful to the
atmosphere, hence interfering with life on the planet, but for nuclear
energy, the gas emission is not intense.
