The History of Volleyball
The game of volleyball originated from the United States. It was founded in the year
1895 by William G. Morgan an instructor at the YMCA in Holyoke. Volleyball was first
known as Mintonette before being referred to as volleyball. It was during a demonstration
game that one of the observers noticed that the players kept volleying the ball over and over
above the net and hence the name volleyball was adopted. The initial net used by the first
volleyball players was six feet, six inches above the floor, just above an average man’s
forehead. When Morgan invented volleyball, he wanted to bring together all the aspects of
basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. The first game of volleyball was played in 1896
(History of Volleyball, 2007).
In the subsequent years, volleyball through YMCA spread from the United States to
various parts of the world starting from Canada, Cuba and the Southern Hemisphere. The
volleyball game began with simple rules but over time it developed more complex rules, and
