Black Lives Matter and the Civil Rights Movement
There has been a certain trend in recent history to offer a kind of nostalgic criticism against modern
social justice movements. When discussing the fight of black Americans for civil rights, some people will
remark about the unseemly tactics that contemporary protests allegedly possess. Unlike those from the
olden days, these versions of Black equality activists are doing something that is completely antithetical
to what was being done during the Civil Right’s movement that there is no point in supporting them.
Black Lives Matter, one of the biggest movements that have rallied around the murders of black men
and boys by American police officers, is usually one of the easiest targets for this type of commentary.
Though it can be particularly frustrating when discussing the Black Lives Matter movement, this is not a
phenomenon that exclusive affects black protestors. Feminists, LGBTQ activists, Native American
activists and pretty much any other group that fights for social justice will be subjected to this form of
criticism. Though, for this research paper, my focus will be set on the analysis of this rhetoric and its use
against modern civil rights movement. The greatest flaw of this attempted criticism is the fact that both
movements are more similar than they are different.
