Question one
The constitution of the United States establishes the fundamental laws and
national government of America. The constitution was signed by the delegates to the
constitutional convention which took place in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787
presided over by George Washington. It was under the Articles of Confederation which
was America’s first governing document where the states were operating like
independent countries and made the national government weak (Vile, 2012). During the
convention three branches of the federal government were formed. These branches
included the executive, legislative and judicial. Apart from the three branches a system of
checks and balances was formed to ensure that no branch overpowered the other. This
plan was devised by the delegates to ensure a stronger federal government. In 1791 the
constitution was amended where the first ten amendments included the bill of rights
which catered for basic individual rights and freedom such as freedom of speech (Vile,
2012). Up to date the constitution of the US government has had a total of 27
amendments.
