The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the immediate cause of World War I. But the events that led to the Great War go further back into the nineteenth century. As with the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, nationalism, imperialism, and militarism all played a part.

Analyze how the forces of nationalism, imperialism, and militarism irrevocably led to World War I. Pay particular attention to the rise of Pan-Slavism in Eastern Europe and the corresponding rise of nationalism in German-speaking states. Analyze how the alliance system contributed to the ultimate outbreak of war.

Then analyze the events that drew the United States into World War I. Clearly discuss why America first remained neutral between 1914-1917. What role did ethnicity play in America's neutrality? Then identify and analyze the specific events that led to America's entrance into the war. Evaluate America's contribution to the war effort and to what extent America's entry contributed to the end of the war. Finally, analyze the events that led to the defeat of the Treaty of Versailles. What effect did this have on America's role in the world during the 1920s and 1930s? Pay particular attention to the role of President Woodrow Wilson both during and after the war, in particular, his efforts to establish the League of Nations.

Introduction

The Great War/First World War/War to End All Wars traces its origin in Europe from
28th July 1914 to 11st November 1918 (Chickering et al. 2005). Majority of the nations that
participated in this war were Russia, United States of America, Europe, Middle East, Italy,
Japan, Great Britain, France, Turkey and other countries of the world. The Great War came to an
end after Central Powers were defeated by entry of America into the war. The historic war was

essay is addressing key factors such as nationalism, imperialism, rebellion of the 1900,
militarism, the role of President Woodrow Wilson in forming the League of Nations, the rise of
Pan-Slavism in Eastern Europe & German Speaking states, the alliance system and events that
compelled America to enter into the global conflict.
Nationalism
A section of people in Bosnia and Herzegovina were not happy being part of Serbia.
They developed a strong urge of being associated with Austria. Due to insatiable appetite to be
associated with Austria, this great and uncontrolled nationalism had a direct and significant
impact into the cause of the war. Evidently, indomitable forces of nationalism in various parts of
Europe were to the large extent beginning of war in Europe. Each and every country tried to
show dominance and mighty that indeed it’s proud being associated with the citizens (Martin,
2017).
