significant changes in the business environment. Various issues such as dynamic business
conditions and stiff competition have become integral components of the business practices
of organizations. The issues are driving the businesses to make some critical changes in their
organizational practices and trends. Increased acknowledgment concerning the importance of
the employees in the making of strategic decisions is one of the organizational behavior that
is rapidly emerging. Currently, the employers have commenced linking the sustainability and
growth of an organization to the engagement of the employees in the organizational
management. As a result of this organizational behavior, the concept of employee
engagement has become more crucial and intensive in the business organizations than ever
before. The practice of employee engagement is a relatively new concept. The concept has a
great impact on the level of the production of the employees and their job satisfaction at the
workplace (Stationery Office 2013:105). Besides, the engagement of employees has a
relationship with the practices of total quality management. In direction to this, the primary
aim of this paper is to shed some light on the idea of employee engagement. This will include
a discussion of the significance of the engagement to the both the organization and the
individual and the factors that influence that engagement.
The term employee engagement refers to the extent by which an employee is
enthusiastic about his or her job and duties at the work place, passionate, motivated to,
committed and involved with an organization (Robertson& Cooper 2015:5). It is a concept
that elaborates the degree of the readiness of an employee to contribute to the success of an
organization by applying both sincere and discretionary efforts. The aspect covered by
employee engagement is comprehensive since it includes both implicit and explicit employee

engagement with an organization. In the scenario where the employee engagement with the
company is high, the employee expresses and uses cognitive, emotional and physical
commitment and involvement towards his or her duties. Besides, emotional and intellectual
parts of employee commitment to an organization and the actions that the employee willingly
carry for the benefit of the organization are also covered under employee engagement scope.
The effectiveness and significance of the concept of employee engagement can be
determined in the context of the performance of the employee and his or her efforts in
ensuring that the organization obtains long term success. In today's business environment
where the competition has greatly increased, the survival and success of organizations is
