Leah is a 38-year-old woman of Asian-American descent. Her father immigrated to Hawaii from Japan where he met her mother. She was raised in Hawaii. Her family moved to California when she was 15 years old and her brother was age 11. Leah describes her childhood as, “very tumultuous. My brother and I walked on pins and needles never knowing if our father would come home from work. Sometimes he would stay out all night drinking and gambling. My mother would drag us around in the car looking for him”. At 18, Leah met and married her husband. They had one child, Julian, who is now 14-years-old. Leah’s husband was killed in a drug related crime when Julian was 11-years-old. Leah comes to see you in regard to Julian. He has been suspended from school for possession of alcohol on campus. She recently found drug paraphernalia in his room. She is afraid that he is using cocaine or methamphetamine because of his erratic and explosive behavior, mood swings and sleeping patterns. Question 1
Considering the information in the DSM-5, briefly discuss your diagnostic and family
concerns. What further information might you look for and why?
From the analysis of Leah’s family, it is very clear that she was raised in a very
dysfunctional family where there was no better organization where their behaviors would be
significantly engaged. An important thing to consider in this case is the existing cultural
differences between Leah’s father immigrated to the United States where he met her mother in
Hawaii. A marriage that is built on different cultural setting requires significant focus in ensuring
that children who are born in that particular family are well engaged. The parents are therefore
expected to close the barrier that may exist and ensure that they lead a better family life.
Leah and her brother have been significantly exposed to very inhumane punishment where
they walked on needles and pins. Sometimes their mother would drag them along to look for their
father who was a gambler and an alcohol addict. He never hid these behaviors from her family,
and thus it influenced negatively on the children. It is clear that the parenting style that was adopted
by Leah’s parents was not effective since it did not focus on the effective aspects of human
development and thus they did not focus on positive virtues, which improve individual personality.
Parenting style has a significant influence on the overall well-being of a child. Parenting style,
therefore, involves the conditions and environment under which parents expect their children to
grow in. The overall influence of a parenting style that is adopted by parents plays a very
significant role in influencing the overall well-being of a child through childhood to adulthood.
