Selected Country: Rintoul Civil Construction Company.
Introduction
Over the past decade, it has become increasingly challenging to deploy
internalization strategies and find nations to conduct business with. Large corporations
can acknowledge that globalization is one of the most critical challenges they face in this
dynamic global economy. Standardized approaches to new foreign markets provide
numerous opportunities for businesses by uncovering an underserved niche that matches
the business. `Going global` provides a platform for a company to improve its growth and
potential and thus maintain the competitive advantage. However, the absence of contractenforcing mechanisms, regulatory systems, and specialized intermediaries make it
challenging to effectively explore international avenues by creating dependence on
demand cycles which may easily destabilize the business. Thus, to benefit from
international expansion in emerging markets, effective and resourceful planning and
creative execution are key.
One of the companies that seek to expand globally is Rintoul Civil Construction
Company. For 25 years, Rintoul Civil Construction Company has been able to maintain
competitive advantage and a strong reputation in New Zealand by providing quality
construction works. However, it has become increasingly essential to diversify the
company`s operations by tapping into new markets and clients. As an employee of the
company, I would suggest that the firm expands to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Rintoul Civil Construction Company will provide extensive construction, transport, and
infrastructure facilities to all seven states of the United Arab Emirates. The United Arab
Emirates has experienced rapid expansion and innovation in all its seven states and

particularly in Dubai. Having transformed from a desert landscape, the United Arab
Emirates has emerged as one of the world`s exotic profiled regions and playground for
investors and tourists, (Dhabi, 2015). However, as a result of global recession and the
need for better transportation and infrastructure facilities to service the population
including tourists and investors, the United Arab Emirates is in dire need of more
industrialized facilities and transport systems to conduct its commercial, industrial and
political activities.
Country Study
The United Arab Emirates is a hotbed for corporate expansion. There are
numerous opportunities particularly infrastructure opportunities for expanding to UAE to
satisfy the population and make the nation a more attractive tourist destination, (Sassen,
2015). Not only does the nation`s reputation of profits and capital, the absence of foreign
exchange controls, income and corporate taxes attract foreign investment, but also
provides a promising market for Rintoul Civil Construction Company.
Environmental Factors: Economic/Geographic Factors
According to 2016-2017 reports, the United Arab Emirates` gross domestic product
(GDP) was estimated at 390.30 billion US dollars. The GDP per capita is averaged at
70,487.87 USD equivalent to 320 percent the world`s average, (Irvine, 2016). The GDP
growth rate was averaged at 5.81%. The United Arab Emirates` economy is considered
the 59th most complex economy in the world. UAE recorded imports of 219 billion $ and
exports of 150 billion $ recording a negative trade balance of 69 billion $, (Irvine, 2016).
The top export destinations of the nation include Saudi Arabia, India, Oman, Japan, and
China. The top import nations are the UK, Germany, the US, China, and India. The top

exports of the nation are petroleum gas, refined and crude petroleum, planes and other
spacecraft, cars, jewelry, diamonds, and gold. The rate of unemployment has continued to
decrease since 2014. The labor force in terms of occupation is such that the industrial
sector takes 14%, agriculture 8% and services 78%, (Dhabi, 2015). The United Arab
Emirates possesses an advanced network of transport and infrastructure systems ranging
from airports, roads to telecommunications. These systems (including the seven
international airports in UAE) connect the seven states of UAE and neighboring nations
such as Saudi Arabia and Oman. The industrial and services sector largely contributes to
the nation`s annual growth rate estimated at 44.5% since 2014, (Dhabi, 2015). The largest
increase in the GDP share has been experienced in the industrial sector which had grown
by an average of 17% annually since 2014 and the trade sector, (Dhabi, 2015). Major
decreases have been experienced in the oil and gas sectors and the manufacturing sector.
Geographic Factors
With its capital at Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates has an area of 85 square
kilometers and a total population of 9304 with an annual growth rate of 4%, (Dhabi,
2015). The country is located on the east of the Arab world sharing borders with Saudi
Arabia and Oman. Most of the stretch is desert land surrounded by the Arabian Sea and
the Persian Gulf with a coastline stretch of 1416km. according to the CIA World Fact
book, UAE has three geographical zones; rolling sand dunes stretching from the coast
into a desert wasteland, low-lying coastal plain land, and flat land.
When it comes to natural resources, UAE has vast natural gas and petroleum
resources. Underwater aquifers have fallen by over 13% leading to salinity increases,
(Irvine, 2016). Freshwater in the country has been overexploited and is thus limited. The

country has several strengths including easy access to low energy costs, high purchasing
power, and oil resources. Apart from petroleum, the nation also has access to gypsum,
marl, chromite, limestone, and sand. When it comes to climate, the United Arab Emirates
is very sunny and hot. The average maximum temperatures can reach above 122.0
Fahrenheit with the hottest months being August and July and minimum temperatures
experienced in January and February, (Irvine, 2016). UAE`s coastal regions are prone to
torrential burst and violent storms that result in floods and severely reduced visibility.
The United Arab Emirates consists both arable and desert land. The arable land is 0.8%
and 28% of this land is irrigated artificially. About 17% of the population live in rural
and with thriving agriculture, (Dhabi, 2015). Most part o...
