It is no secret that organizations which are pliable and easily adaptable to change and
innovation tend to lead the pack in their prospective industries. Considering this, it is of little
surprise that the well-known coffee shop giant, Starbucks, is known for its readiness and
adaptiveness to change be it organizational, in management, or otherwise. One of the most
painful growing pains that an organization can experience is that of changes or shifts in
management. Starbucks however, does well in taking such changes in stride with a culture of
employees who embrace whatever changes shift in management may bring with admirable ease
and with little disruption to the organization’s productivity and performance.
While Starbucks handles change in management well, such changes in the organizations
are not always seamless, however, the organization does take every barrier they have
encountered, examines it, and learns from it. Various actions from the organization show that
they do not make the same mistake twice. Just one example of many of Starbuck’s ability to
handle management change failures head on with innovation is the in relation to Howard
Schultz. In 2000 Shultz left Starbucks after serving as the organization’s CEO for 13 years.
Schultz well-meaning yet inexperienced predecessor drove the organization into a slow, yet
steady nose dive throughout his tenure. This decline lead the organization in 2008 to persuade
Shultz to return to the helm of the company and recover the losses since his departure. As the
organization and all of its affiliates held a collective breath as Shultz aggressively brought the
organization back to the head of the industry. (Park, Ribiere, & Schulte, 2014)
