Description

Imagine you are narrating a guided tour throughout the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.

Create a 700- to 1,050-word tour guide describing the places and artifacts that the tourists will see.

Include the following in your tour:

  • Visit at least three cities in the ancient Greek world (this includes Greece, Crete, and modern Turkey), and describe what can be found in each.
  • Three specific pieces of ancient Greek sculpture
  • Artifacts from a mixture of the Bronze Age, the Golden Age, and the Hellenistic Greek periods
  • Three specific pieces of ancient Roman architecture (not limited to the city of Rome, but built by Romans)
  • Discuss two pieces of Roman literature. The tourists will need to be entertained during those long drives through the countryside!
  • Explain the significance of each place or artifact discussed on the tour.
  • Include at least five images to illustrate your guide.

Format your assignment according to appropriate course level APA guidelines, but it should be written in 1st and 2nd person, since it is script read to the tourists. Include in-text citations for all outside information.

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen! I will be your tourist guide in this amazing trip to some
of the most relevant cities of the Ancient Greek and Roman empires. Each of the selected cities
where we will stop has something that can´t be found anywhere else! Keep your eyes open
because we will see real world wonders!
We will start our tour of the Greek world in the Temple of Artemis, one of the seven
Wonders of the ancient world, located in Ephesus. It used to be one of the most important centers
of commerce in antiquity, because of its strategic location in the Mediterranean coastline (Foss,
2010).

Temple of Artemis (Ephesus, Turkey)
In Ephesus, we can see buildings from very different times and historic periods. We will
thus see Christian churches, Roman baths, Greek temples, all side by side.
The statue of Artemis in the Temple portrays a goddess with a mural crown, and a disc
behind the crown; on her breast, a garland of flowers, as a sign of her influence in spring time. It
resembles the original image that ancient Greeks had of one of their most important goddesses
(Foss, 2010).

Still in Turkey, our next stop is in Hierapolis. The city was built by the Greeks in the state
of Anatolia as a thermal spa in the 2nd century. Its mineral-rich hot springs attracted myriads of
both Greeks and Romans, who believed that the water had curative properties (Yildiz, 2010). We
will profit from the visit to relax ourselves at the thermal springs of Pamukkale.

We can’t end our tour of the Ancient Greek world without visiting Greece, right? Our
tour will finish in Epidaurus, where will visit its 181-m long theater. The theater of Epidaurus is
one of the best conserved ancient Greek theaters. Built in the 4th century BC, it has impressive
acoustics and was for sure one of the best places to delight with ancient Greek tragedies and
comedies (Jollands, 2011).

Theater at Epidaurus (Greece)
At Epidaurus, we will as well delight ourselves with several of the most beautiful Greek
sculptures stored at the Temple of Asclepius such as Aura on Horseback, the Goddess Igea
sculpture or the Statue of Asclepios. They were sculpted during the period in which the Classical
art was being replaced by the Hellenistic art (Spivey, 2013).

This was our last stop in the ancient Greek empire. Now we are going to see the wonders
of the ancient Roman empire. While we get there, I want to recommend some works of Latin
literature to avoid boredom during our journey. If you like poetry, Gaius Catullus is the best
fitted poet for the modern tastes. Maybe he is not considered very canonical, but his poetry is
very appreciated by other poets, and he had a big influence over roman and renai...
