There are various ways of dealing with unmotivated and ambivalent students. When it
comes to choosing majors and undertaking careers, there are various ways of motivating the
learner. One of these strategies is motivational interviewing. In the case of Eric, motivational
interviewing can be used as a brief intervention strategy for evoking behavior change, (Brown,
2013). The lack of motivation may affect a student`s readiness to attend college or make career
choices. Thus, the therapist can use motivational interviewing to help Eric come up with a
college and career plan by making tentative decisions and choices that will shape his future life,
(Miller, 2013).
Besides, motivational interviewing can help the student explore strengths, values and
personal interests which may affect how they view college and motivate change in behavior.
During the motivational interviewing session, the counselor can use the internet and online
resources to help the student research a college and career that interests them or even identify
alternatives. By making such tasks manageable, the student`s fear of exploring college and career
opportunities may decrease and they may end up choosing to attend school. Another strategy that
would work effectively in the case of Eric is reflective listening and showing empathy, (Rollnick,
2015).
The use of a non-confrontational approach coupled with empathy will spark a
