EVIDENCE BASED DECISION-MAKING (EBDM) An evidence-based approach to patient care seeks to improve patient care through informed decision making. Evidence-based patient care seeks to close the gap between what is known and what is practiced. The utilization of evidence-based decision-making by all health and service professionals is an important element of quality practice. If you have not already been exposed to the term and the critical pieces that are required for evidence-based decision making and evidence-based treatment, you will find that it has a prominent role throughout the health care field. Jane Forrest on Evidence The next question we need to ask ourselves is WHO is responsible for seeing that clients receive evidence-based information? It appears that the responsibility for evidence-based practice is shared. Please ponder these statements regarding this shared responsibility....  First and foremost, health and service providers have a responsibility for promoting evidence in their practice settings to assure that their practice maximizes the health of their patients.  Professional and regulatory associations have the responsibility to encourage and support evidence-based practice.  Educators and educational institutions have the responsibility to assist students in developing the skills and abilities to assess, interpret and incorporate evidence into their practice; to insist that researchers communicate their findings in language that is familiar to practitioners; and to assure that curricula are evidence based.  Employers have the responsibility to provide an environment supportive of evidence-based practice, the tools necessary to implement evidence into practice, and continuing education to assist their employees in staying current with new evidence.  Governments have the responsibility to provide the necessary funding to support heath and service research, its dissemination, and the development of health information systems that support evidence-based practice (Hallum & Partridge, 2006).
