setting described is a lone log house standing alone in the middle of a vast forest with no
surrounding population since most of the people had moved away. Some of the words that
contribute to the mood include, "He lived alone in a house of logs surrounded by the vast forest,
of whose gloom and silence he seemed a part, for no one had ever known him to neither smile
