Naturalistic Observations and Evaluation
Introduction
The Grey is a restaurant operated by an African-American chef and located on 109
Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard, Savannah, GA. This area is a historical place because it was a
former bus station for segregating blacks and whites in the mid 20th-century. My decision to
select this public space for this assignment was to observe the significance of the history of its
location like interactions that exist between the people that work and dine at the place. Also, it is
convenient for me to observe the two hours a day due to my previous interactions with Mashama
Bailey as a customer of the establishment. The time and dates that were chosen for the
performance of this study are Friday 25th and Sunday 27th August from 5 to 7 pm.
According to my experience from dining at this restaurant and preliminary information
gathered from my sources, the selected days and time are those that it enjoys at 75percent
capacity and have individuals from diverse backgrounds. On the first day of the visit to The
Grey, I arrived thirty minutes before the allocated time for the conduct of the experiment to
observe the interactions that occur between the customers and employees from their arrival and
exit from the place. Meanwhile, Chef Bailey had arranged a one-person space for me that would
afford me a vantage view of the entire environment as I enjoy my glass of drink and observe the
people according to my outline.
Description of the Interior and Exterior of The Grey
Meanwhile, it is necessary to describe the internal and external characteristics of The
Grey as a means to utilize the information in explaining it role in the enhancement of the
interactions or otherwise. According to Spitzberg & Cupach (2012), it is an essential source of

reference for determining the sustainability and profitability of the business that is defined by
patronage and experiences. As noted in the earlier paragraph, the restaurant is located in former
segregated bus Greyhound bus station that did not allow black people to use its services. While
observing the design of the exterior of the restaurant, it was noted that the owners retained some
of the features of the waiting area for passengers used by the transport service company as a
preservation of its historical identity. Also, the use of powder-blue paintings and stainless steel to
bring a gleam to the place is evident of the black identity of this public place.
Regarding the interior of The Grey, the tables and chairs are arranged in three formats.
There are seven units of two-persons seating arrangements for a couple that occupied the center
of the room while the four-persons that five in total were organized in the corners of the place to
accommodate a group of people that intend to dine together. The layout is arranged in such a
manner that when a person walks into the restaurant, he or she comes into contact with the
reception desk that leads to the seating areas ...
