Anatolian Journal of Psychiatry, 17(6), 433-441. Each day there are more and more patients showing early onset Schizophrenia. The exact causes of Schizophrenia have not yet been proven. This causes frustration for all of those affected by the disorder. Many medical professionals feel disorders such as Schizophrenia are caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors. What still goes unanswered is what may be causing the early onset of this disorder in teens. Marijuana abuse puts teens at a higher risk for the development of Schizophrenia (Ceylan, Yeşilyurt, Akdede, Sayın, & Alptekin, 2016). Sekar, A., Bialas, A. R., de Rivera, H., Davis, A., Hammond, T. Recently there have been many studies involving the use of drugs such as marijuana and its effects on Schizophrenia; through these studies it has not only been found that drug use can serve as a trigger to bring out dormant Schizophrenia/ Psychosis, it may even cause Schizophrenia in teens. Ones of these studies concluded that the “Use of street drugs (including LSD, methamphetamine, marijuana/hash/cannabis) and alcohol have been linked with significantly increased probability of developing Psychosis and Schizophrenia.” (Sekar, Bialas, de Rivera, Davis, Hammond, Kamitaki, & Genovese, 2016). Annotated Bibliography 3 One of the major psychological illnesses that are commonly characterized by visual illusions is psychosis, or what is commonly known as schizophrenia. It should be noted that there is a variation in the hallucinations that are experienced by individuals who are suffering from schizophrenia, with auditory hallucinations also evident, especially those who have primary schizophrenia, with a prevalence rate ranging from 16%-72%. The severity of the hallucinations varies depending on the development of schizophrenia, with individuals who need urgent hospitalization having the most pronounced form of hallucinations (Teeple, Caplan, & Stern, 2009).
