CRISIS MANAGEMENT
Crisis Management
Crisis can be defined as a period of time where events happen that change the state of
affairs from what is normal or what people are used to. During a crisis it is always most likely
that the situation will turn to the worst if not handled properly. A crisis can however also lead to
a favorable change or outcome of things if handled in the right way. A crisis can affect an
individual, group or even an entire society. And they can be political, social, economic,
environmental or even security wise. Institutions are faced with a lot of potential crisis situations
and to avoid problems. It is always advised that they be prepared to handle any potential form of
crisis situation. To this effect, they usually come up with a plan that will help them counter the
situations. This is what we call crisis management.
Crisis management is commonly referred to as the plans and strategies that are designed
to help an institution with a sudden unexpected event. Crisis situations tend to slow the normal
operation of an institution thus proper decisions are implemented to limit such damages. Schools
are prone to crisis situations and therefore they are always well prepared and most have plans
that help them deal with these situations.
The plans are usually led by individuals who are trained to deal with different types of
crisis in schools. I had the privilege of interviewing one of these individuals who were the lead in
crisis management in their school. This school professional worked with a team at the school and
had experience in crisis management and they were able to talk to me about the crisis
management plan of their school and what it all entailed.
