- Social development involves learning the values, knowledge and skills that enable children to relate to others effectively and to contribute in positive ways to family, school and the community. This kind of learning is passed on to children directly by those who care for and teach them, as well as indirectly through social relationships within the family or with friends, and through children’s participation in the culture around them. Through their relationships with others and their growing awareness of social values and expectations, children build a sense of who they are and of the social roles available to them.

Concept
Stereotype vulnerability in page 413.
Background of concept
The text on page 413 talks about the skills that minority children develop to cope and
survive in diverse communities like the united states of America. Stereotype vulnerability is the
development of negative attitudes towards one’s subcultural group. The concept explains why
children who from minority groups in the united states and elsewhere may find problems fitting
into the school environment and other diverse environments.
Example
An example of stereotype vulnerability is when a child moves from a place where they
are familiar with to a place that they are unique in some way. For example, when immigrant
children move from cities in the world that speak different languages from English like Africa to
the united states, they encounter problems feeling accepted. For instance, people from Nigeria
who are used to speaking pidgin encounter problems feeling accepted because of their think
Nigerian accents.

Acculturation and assimilation
With regards to acculturation and assimilation, Manuel can be helped to blend into the
school environment by making efforts of teaching him English and encouraging him to practice
the language. The problem of Manuel is because of his inability to speak English proficiently
like his classmates. Ensuring that Manuel learns and becomes proficient at English at an early
age may be important in helping him not only perform better in the subjects that he is failing, but
also ensure that he makes new friends. The scho...
