Description

All information needed to answer discussion questions comes from your Chapter 6 text book readings, Chptr 6 power points ( attached below) and any supplied videos. Do not consult outside resources other than your text book or supplied videos to answer these questions. Answers atleast 200 words long and should come from the information presented in the text book readings or supplied videos and then your interpretation/integration of that information to receive credit. If, after you have posted your initial response, you would like to look up additional information from another source and use that information in a response to another student's post, that is allowed.

Option A:

Reflect on the perception activity (the slides that contained images and videos illustrating perceptual distortions and biases) and what you learned in the reading regarding perceptual errors and biases.

1. From your perspective, discuss at least three take-aways (implications) from this information.

2. In your opinion, how can you use this information in your work life and your everyday life?

Chapter 6 Perception and Individual Decision Making MGT 4472 Learning Objectives 1. Explain the factors that influence perception. 2. Describe attribution theory. 4. Contrast the rational model of decision making with bounded rationality and intuition. Perception (6-1)  Process by which individuals organize and interpret sensory impressions in order to give meaning to their environment Observe info via the senses Screen the info and select what to process Organize selected data into patterns to interpret and respond Attributions and Attribution Theory (6-2)  We like to explain “why” others behave a certain way  Attribution theory – attempts to determine whether an individual’s behavior is internally or externally caused  Internally vs. externally caused ▪ ▪ Consensus ▪ Distinctiveness ▪ Consistency Fun illustrative video: How Not to Email Your Professor What type of attribution is being made? Attributions and Attribution Theory (6-2) Errors or biases can distort attributions  Fundamental Attribution Error   Tendency to underestimate the influence of external factors and overestimate the influence of internal/personal factors when judging others’ behavior Self-Serving Bias  Tendency for individuals to attribute their own successes to internal factors and put the blame for failures on external factors Common Shortcuts in Judging Others  Selective perception  Halo effect  Contrast effects  Stereotyping  Self-fulfilling prophecy  Pygmalion effect video (6-2) Common Biases and Errors in Decision Making  Overconfidence bias  Anchoring bias  Confirmation bias  Availability bias  Escalation of commitment  Hindsight bias (6-4) Reducing Biases and Errors (Exhibit 6-4) Implications  Behavior follows perception, so to influence behavior at work, assess how people perceive their work. Often behaviors we find puzzling can be explained by understanding the initiating perceptions.  Make better decisions by recognizing perceptual biases and decisionmaking errors we tend to commit. Learning about these problems doesn’t always prevent us from making mistakes, but it does help.  Combine rational analysis with intuition. These are not conflicting approaches to decision making. By using both, you can actually improve your decision making effectiveness.

Strategies for Developing Compensation Rates
The main factors to consider when developing a pay policy for the employees is that the
chosen approach should maximize the ability of the company to attract and retains employees
that possess the right qualifications. Additionally, the pay has to be competitive and be within the
capabilities of the business (Anthony, Perrewe, &Kacmar, 1993). Working out how to
compensate the personnel can be quite a challenge, a business may vary in size, and some may
be start-ups and a long way from being productive and other factors. Besides, not all
organizations may have the information needed to make the decision about the pay and so may
rely on surveys. The information is therefore obtained by analyzing how other companies are
compensating and using it as a baseline for developing one'...
