Module 3 Assignment: Information Retrieval Paper – Part 1
Submit by 2359 (CT) Saturday at the close of Module 3.

Date:
Overview: “Information Retrieval Paper - Part 1”
This Module you will begin to develop an Information Retrieval Paper. This Assignment focuses on
identifying appropriate evidence-based nursing practices related to specific problems you may
identify as you work in the healthcare/workplace setting.
The goals of an Information Retrieval Paper are to (1) practice using APA format, (2) summarize
and examine the strengths and limitations of research articles, and (3) prepare you for the Nursing
Research Course where you will write a research paper using the skills you have learned
completing this Information Retrieval Paper.
As a part of your Information Retrieval Paper, you will begin development of a research question
using PICO format. Chapter 10 of the Role Development text book explains PICO. Be sure to
develop your research question and then just below your research question delineate what the P,
I, C, and O components of your question are.
For this Module 3 Assignment you will prepare a Title Page in proper APA format for your
Information Retrieval Paper, identify three peer-reviewed articles, and summarize each article
using APA format.
It may be helpful to look at the outline for the entire paper before you begin this Module’s
Assignment. Assignments in this Module plus in Module 4 and 5 will address the Information
Retrieval Paper.

Part 1: Research Problem and Question using PICO Format
A. In the space below, identify the clinical problem in the workplace setting that will
serve as the focus of your information retrieval paper. Make sure that the problem is
one that would be under your complete control as a nurse.
Clinical Problem (Type in box below)
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) in hospitalized patients.
B. In the space below, compose a preliminary research question about the clinical
problem that you identified in the workplace. Use this criteria in composing a
preliminary research question:
- Question must relate to a clinical problem in the workplace.
- Question cannot be answered with a simple yes or no.
- The issue to be studied is under your complete control as a nurse.
- The question is open ended.
Delineate the PICO components of your question.

State your question

Problem: Catheter related Urinary Tract Infection
Intervention: Dipstick urinalysis is a fast and an affordable way of diagnosing UTI. Urine culture
is the most preferred method of diagnosis despite the 30% contamination rate to fully diagnose
UTI. For an effective intervention, it is trivial for nurses be wary of symptoms and ready to
conduct the tests as they diagnose infection.
Comparator: Nurses are held responsible for managing all the indwelling urinary catheters in a
facility, and should effectively exercise the core policies that are recommended by the CDC to
help counter CAUTIs. The aim is to minimize the use of catheters in patients, and to shun the
use for the benefit of the nursing staff (i.e. management of incontinence). If as a nurse, you feel a
catheter is not needed for patient, approach a nursing supervisor to have the matter looked into
and catheters removed.
Outcome: Prevention is better than cure they say, and this is the role of nurses in reducing the
rate of UTI acquired in hospitals.
C. Compose a rationale that explains why you chose the research question. (Type in
box below)
Rationale for Selecting the Research Question (Type in box below)
JBoyd 2017
N3345 Transition to Professional Nursing
I chose this research question because nurses too often fail to give proper care to patients who
confine to an indwelling Foley catheter. Urinary tract infection is a significant disease that can
harm the whole urinary track if not catch on time and treat adequately. Also, because I believe
UTI is preventable. Thus, urinary tract infection is a sensitive issue that needs to be focused on.
D. After completing this portion of the Assignment, go to this module’s Discussion,
and follow the directions for sharing your research question. After receiving
feedback
from your colleagues, revise your research question, if necessary, in the space
provided.

Part 3: APA References and Summaries
• Select three peer-reviewed, evidence-based articles that address your research question.
• Compose an overview about your choice of the three articles. Answer these questions:
- Where did you search for articles?
- How did you decide what articles to include?
• Post references to the three articles in APA format.
• Summarize the article and how it addresses your research question.
Overview
Where did you search for articles? How did you decide what articles to include?
While conducting the research, all my sources were from the internet. I decided on these specific
scholarly and academic articles as they had recent information on urinary tract infection and how
nurses have a role to play in its prevention.
I developed the above PICO question by reading and following the guidelines in the national
study regarding UTI. Saint, S., Kowalski, C. P., Kaufman, S. R., Hofer, T. P., Kauffman, C. A.,
Olmsted, R. N., … Krein, S. L. (2008). Preventing Hospital-Acquired Urinary Tract Infection in

In the space below, write a summary paragraph in APA format. Use scholarly writing to describe
the article, the decision-making process you used to select the article, and how it addresses your
research question. Use professional writing style.
This article focus on rational sanctions in a succinct format that is designed to enable intensive
care in hospitals by executing and prioritizing catheter-associated urinary tract infection
(CAUTI) prevention efforts in their hospitals. It also looks at how these preventions and cure can
be achieved by hospital personnel.

Article 2
In the space below, post the reference for the second article in correct APA format.
Naish, W., & Hallam, M. (2007). Urinary tract infection: diagnosis and management for
nurses. Nursing Standard, 21(23), 50-57. doi:10.7748/ns2007.02.21.23.50.c4520
In the space below, write a summary paragraph in APA format. Use scholarly writing to describe
the article, the decision-making process you used to select the article, and how it addresses your
research question. Use professional writing style.
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common hospital acquired infections, so
it is of most importance that nurses in all healthcare settings learn how to deal with
patients harboring this condition effectively. UTI is defined in this article, categories of
patients that are likely to get infected and the root causes. Accurate and timely diagnosis
are significant in the treatment and the intervention, prevention of more complications,
some of which might have serious ramifications for the patients. Inappropriate and
contaminated investigations are very expensive, and result in patients being over-treated.
UTI exists in different types, which might prove its management quite challenging.
However, with a good understanding of its prevention, management and assessment will
ensure nurses offer the required treatment.

Article 3
In the space below, post the reference for the third article in correct APA format.
Saint, S., Gaies, E., Fowler, K. E., Harrod, M., & Krein, S. L. (2014). Introducing a catheterassociated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) prevention guide to patient safety
(GPS). American Journal of Infection Control, 42(5), 548-550.
doi:10.1016/j.ajic.2013.12.019
In the space below, write a summary paragraph in APA format. Use scholarly writing to describe
the article, the decision-making process you used to select the article, and how it addresses your
research question. Use professional writing style.
Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is among the hospital-acquired conditions
that is highly intended for reduction by the government, despite how challenging it is to prevent.
This article has come up with a self-assessment tool (a catheter-associated urinary tract infection
prevention guide to patient safety) that is based on vast qualitative evaluations. It describes the
rationale, utility and features of the quality improvement tool.

Guidelines for Critical Analysis of an Article
You completed your article summaries in Module 3. The next step is to complete a critical analysis
of each article. For each article, ask yourself these questions when completing this section of your
Information Retrieval Paper.
•
What were the strengths of the research? Were a significant number of participants
studied in an appropriate setting that can be applied in a broader sense?
•
What were the limitations of the research? Was the environment controlled?
•
What did the author leave out?
•
Were barriers identified and addressed?
•
Could the findings be implemented with purpose and expected outcomes?
