In simple terms, it is a graphical presentation of different events. For example, to prepare tea, the first step is to put some water in the pan and boil it. After that, add some tea leaves, then sugar and at last add milk (Kammann, 2016). Complex Process from Work Life The complex process selected for this assignment from my work life is driving to my office. This is the process which occurs on a daily basis. I start with turning on the engine of my car. Then I look for fuel because daily I visit by my car. If the fuel is insufficient, I visit the gas station to get it filled. On the other hand, if there is enough of fuel I drive straight away to my office. Once I reach the office premises, the tedious task is to search for the parking area. Just because so many co-workers come by car, there is a shortage of parking space. If there is enough of parking space, I park the park and turn off the engine. Whereas if there is no parking space left, I look for another parking area. Most of the times, some parking area is vacant in another building. After I get safe parking area, I get back to my work (“Structured logic design method using figures of merit and a flowchart methodology” 1993). Metrics For each flowchart process, metrics are required to measure the performance of the process. The metrics used for the process is time. That means the total amount of time taken in minutes or hours, starting from my home driving to my office. For each day of the week, the total time taken is different because sometimes traffic is heavy or sometimes I have to get my car FLOWCHART IMPROVEMENT PROCESS 4 filled with fuel. Today, I took me 23 minutes for the complete process. The time for previous week for all five days is 20, 18, 21, 19, and 23 minutes. Process Improvement Technique Process improvement means to make changes in the existing process to make it simple to understand. The process improvement technique to be used in the given case is process mapping. Process mapping means to represent the work and identify the problem areas and the opportunities for the improvement of the process. The complex interactions can be identified and represented in highly visible, logical and objective way. It finds out where the issue is and provides improvement with common decision-making framework. For the given process, improvements can be made in for driving to the gas station. It can be eliminated because if the fuel tank is full, it does not require refill for at least six to seven days. Another part that can be eliminated is searching for the parking lot. This happens for maximum once in a week that means for rest of the four days I can get parking in the same building (“A Guide to Process Mapping” n.d.). Judgmental Forecasting Considering the changes, the future flowchart will take almost 14 minutes. This is the estimated time after eliminating the two factors looking for fuel and searching for the parking area. Statistical Process Control is a method utilized to control quality, done with the help of statistical
methods. It helps in monitoring and controlling the process to make sure that it gives the full
potential. Various methods available for Statistical Process Control are Control charts, cause and
effect diagrams, histograms, scatter diagrams, probability plots, etc. In the assignment, we have
utilized control charts, and process metrics. Process metrics is calculated with the help of process
