Assignment 2: Assessing and Planning Care for an Elderly Person

In order to gain an insight into the world of elder adults, it is important to understand how they view themselves and the values they hold. Additionally it is important to assess and determine his/her needs and establish appropriate interventions for this individual.

choose an older adult to interview. This cannot be a patient in your clinical setting. You can use a friend, family member, or co-worker. The older adult should be 65 years or older. Use the format provided to record the responses. A list of questions is available for you to start with. Include 2–3 questions of your own to get a complete picture of the older adult. Summarize your findings and also contrast the responses with findings in your readings and other current literature.

Click here to download a patient questionnaire. This form should be used as an example.

After gaining permission, conduct a physical and mental functional assessment of the older adult you have chosen. Review your readings for the process of functional assessment.

Make use of the tools discussed this week to complete a comprehensive assessment of your patient. Search the Internet for resources on these tools.

  1. Tinetti Balance and Gait Evaluation
  2. Katz Index of Activities of Daily Living
  3. Assessment of Home Safety
  4. The Barthel Index

Make sure the older adult is clearly identified on the tools. Do not include their name, but do include professional or other designation, and age. Your name should also be identified on the tool. (This should be a part of your Appendix.)

Compare and contrast the age-related changes of the older person you interviewed and assessed with those identified in this week’s reading assignment. During this data analysis process provide at least 4–6 preliminary issues that you have identified. Identify three alterations in health that you would propose and describe them. Identify a minimum of three comprehensive interventions for each problem.

Make sure that you integrate personal cultural awareness and cultural competency.

Paper should be 5–6 pages, not including the questionnaire or tools used. These should be attached as an Appendix. Remember to use headings to identify the different sections in your paper.

Running head: Assessing and Planning Care for an Elderly Person

Brief introduction (Background information)
In each and every society there are a group of people who are of old age. These groups of people
have contributed immensely in the development and continuity of our various societies. They do
these through procreation, participation in various economic activities of our society and being
pillars in preservation of cultures. Elderly people are therefore very important members of the
society. Due to their age, there are a number of activities that they cannot satisfactorily perform
on their own and thus needs assistance. To offer the necessary assistance to the elderly people,
we must first have a good understanding of their needs in order to respond appropriately, hence
the need to assessing and planning care for the elderly people.

Philosophy on living a long life
Majority of the people living in this world have a wish to live along sweet and prosperous life.
Each and every time young people of age 18 years and below lose their lives, people get so angry
and disappointed because they believe people are not supposed to die at such a younger age. It is
therefore important to have a guess in what different people believe would guarantee a long life.
Some people believe that long life is pegged on; their lifestyle, spiritual life, beliefs, traditions,
culture and nurture. For example; people who live in areas dominated by wars are most likely to
have a shorter life span. Each and every individual is guided by their spiritual beliefs, this affects
the way they interact with the other members of the society. If one believes that violence is not
good for their co-existence with others, they will tend to make peace with their neighbors and
this will help in prolonging their lives. Currently there are lifestyle diseases which have emerged
as a result of the foodsubstances that people consume for example; there are genetically modified
foods which are breeding grounds for the agents causing cancer.
If one’s life is dominated by natural foods and they equally keep healthy lifestyles like exercising
their bodies and acting appropriately in doing body check-ups then they are likely to live longer
lives.

Thoughts about when a person is considered “too old”
People at old age are likely to win empathy from members of the society. Most of the adults
considered to be “too old” tend to be slow in most of their activities. For example they cannot
cross the road quickly. This therefore calls for assistance from other younger members of the
society. Most drivers will therefore slow down on sight of such people and other younger and
active members of the society will equally voluntarily guide them during such processes.
Most of the people tend to think that old age makes one closer to death. The old people are thus
looked upon as people who have exhausted their lives and thus deserve good treatment before
they retire to their graves. The old people tend to examine their lives to see their successes and
failures in during their lives. They tend to be happy for their achievements and equally sad for
the things they failed to achieve in life.
Opinion on the status and treatment of older adults
Older people tend to suffer certain illness that comes about as a result of their age. The age
related diseases include those that affects the bones, sight and hearing impairment. The older
people thus require special treatment and attention to help relieve them of such illness. Some
people equally think older people are too dema...
