Assignment 2
Chapter 11. Reliability
Due date: 09/15/2017

Question 1 (p182-2)
A flashlight has 4 components: 2 batteries with reliability of 0.998, a light bulb with reliability of
0.999, and a switch with reliability of 0.997. Determine the reliability of this series system.
Solution
The total reliability𝑅𝑡 of system connected in series is given by:
𝑅𝑡 = 𝑅1 ∙ 𝑅2 ∙ 𝑅3 ∙ … 𝑅𝑛
𝑅1 , 𝑅2 , 𝑅3 , … 𝑅𝑛 are the reliabilities of the individual components in the system.
The reliability, 𝑅𝑓𝑙𝑎𝑠ℎ𝑙𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 of a flashlight series connected system containing 2 batteries, 1
light bulb and 1 switch is:
𝑅𝑓𝑙𝑎𝑠ℎ𝑙𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 = 𝑅𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑦 × 𝑅𝑏𝑎𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑦 × 𝑅𝑏𝑢𝑙𝑏 × 𝑅𝑠𝑤𝑖𝑡𝑐ℎ
𝑅𝑓𝑙𝑎𝑠ℎ𝑙𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 = 0.998 × 0.998 × 0.999 × 0.997

Question 2 (p182-6)
What is the reliability of the system below, where the reliabilities of components A, B, C, and D
are 0.975, 0.985, 0.988, and 0.993, respectively?

Solution
The total reliability, 𝑅𝑇 of two systems with reliability, 𝑅1 and 𝑅2 connected in parallel is:
𝑅𝑇 = 𝑅1 + 𝑅2 − 𝑅1 ∙ 𝑅2

For our system, given 𝑅𝐴 = 0.975, 𝑅𝐵 = 0.985, 𝑅𝐶 = 0.988 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑅𝐷 = 0.993
The reliability of parallel connected components A and B is:
𝑅𝐴𝐵 = 𝑅𝐴 + 𝑅𝐵 − 𝑅𝐴 𝑅𝐵
𝑅𝐴𝐵 = 0.975 + 0.985 − (0.975 × 0.985) = 0.999625
For the parallel connected components, C and D, their reliability is:
𝑅𝐶𝐷 = 𝑅𝐶 + 𝑅𝐷 − 𝑅𝐶 𝑅𝐷
𝑅𝐶𝐷 = 0.988 + 0.993 − (0.988 × 0.993) = 0.999916
After combining the reliabilities of the components the simplified system diagram is shown:
