Reliability
A flashlight has 4 components: 2 batteries with reliability of 0.998, a light bulb with a reliability
of 0.999, and a switch with a reliability of 0.997. Determine the reliability of the series system.
Since, the components are arranged in series, we calculate the system reliability using the
following relation,
Rs = (Ra) (Rb) (Rc) (Rd)
The reliability values of the 4 components are Ra, Rb, Rc, and Rd respectively.
Then, we substitute, 0.998 for Ra, 0.998 for Rb, 0.999 for Rc, and 0.997 for Rd
So, the reliability of the system is:
Rs = (0.998)(0.998)(0.999)(0.997)
= 0.9920
