Week 5 Discussion
While there are many components from this course that have extended my existing understanding of the importance and value of play for young children, two that stand out to me are the influence that culture has on play, and creating a play based plan for children with social needs.
Culture influences play by setting the standard by which children are accustomed to playing in their culture. In the U.S., children play frequently, and with peers, siblings, or older family members. In some other countries and cultures, children spend much less time playing, and instead help with work at their home. Yet in other cultures play isn't valued as a form of development, so children don't spend much of their time engaged in play. As a teacher this is important to know and recognize in order to make families and children feel comfortable and a part of the classroom community.
Creating a play based plan for a child with social challenges is not an approach that had occurred to me prior to this course. I would have sought out assistance from an OT or a counselor, and I would have even thought about whether or not medication would be helpful for the child. While most children will learn social cues and appropriateness naturally, some children need extra time and assistance in recognizing this part of social skills.
Now that I have the knowledge of tools to use for a play based plan, this will be my first approach each time. I will consider the aspects of social appropriateness that the child can learn by having a buddy to help model such behavior, make sure that activities in class are not competitive in order to minimize frustration and loss, and I will be even more attentive now to keeping a predictable routine and schedule to help a child who is struggling.
