Westward expansion was the populating of the land that was in the mainland United
States and it began after the establishment of the first colonial settlement. The expansion affected
many Native American groups with one of the tribes being the Sioux. This paper examines the
westward expansion in relation to the effects it had on the Sioux group as well as exploring the
history of their prophet Wovoka.
