In the narrative of "Araby," James Joyce focuses on three core themes that will clarify the
purpose behind the story. The story unfolds on North Richmond Street, which is an area made up
of two lines of houses, in a neighborhood that is desolate. In spite of the dangerous environment
of "ash pits and dark muddy lanes," (Joyce, p. 302) the protagonist tries to discover evidence of
beauty and love in his environment. All through the narrative, the boy experiences an assortment
of changes that present themselves as various themes of the story including transformation,
religion, and alienation.

The storyteller alienates himself from family and close friends which causes despair and
loneliness, being one of the main themes surrounding the narrative. His admiration for Mangan's
