Racial, Ethnic, and Cultural History
Growing up, I thought I was African-American until I reached the point in my life where
I began understanding that although my skin is black and my race is black, I have an ethnicity of
Cuban. Learning that my ethnicity is Cuban but that I am also a part of the African-American
community as well, was quite shocking. However, I have lived my life with the AfricanAmerican identity consuming the Cuban ethnicity. Cubans are looked at among the population as
immigrants and although prejudice still remains with the African-Americans, I feel that
identifying with them bring a greater sense of who I was. I also have learned much about Cuba in
regard to the history. Cuba was inherited through concepts of the Republic stemming from
France, which there are various racist mechanisms that remain today (Ottaviano, G. I., & Peri,
G., 2016).
Information about Diversity and Relations
There are so many consistencies and inconsistencies of diversity throughout America.
However, I have learned more positive concepts of diversity as opposed to the negative concepts.
I believe this is because of how our societies are beginning to come together in the fighting of
equal rights and not as much (although still exists), racism and discrimination is slowly
decreasing. In the decades of the 50’s and 60’s, the workforce was made up of more white males,
than any other gender or race (Ottaviano, G. I., & Peri, G., 2016). However, our modern society
has become broader in races while both genders make up the workforce industries. There are
significant mixes of races, religious beliefs, backgrounds, cultural concepts, and ethnicities all
throughout America. I have always been really huge on obtaining an education and career...
