Hypertension is one of the risk factors for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity.
Hypertension is attributed to external factors such as lifestyle and diet. Dietary modifications such
as reduction of salt intake, weight loss, and moderation of alcohol consumption have proven very
effective in lowering blood pressure. The Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) has
been developed over the years and referred to planned dietary patterns as well as increased
potassium intake for hypertension patients. DASH is used differently for different cultures due to
different disparities in the cultures, and our focus is on the African Americans (Huntley,2013).
African Americans show the highest likelihood of developing hypertension and other
complications leading from high blood pressure. In regards to adults with high blood pressure,
African Americans have recorded significantly higher rates of mortality than Caucasians regarding
cardiovascular diseases. The reasons behind these disparities thought not widely researched have
been related to differences in environment and lifestyles with factors of influence being education,
socio-economic status, body weight, physical activity, tobacco use, and nutrition (Eckel, 2013).
Even though diet is an important factor in influencing risk and development of
hypertension, influences of specific dietary factors in African Americans remain uncertain because
