Elements of a Successful Therapeutic Relationship
A Therapist is professional individual trained to help people deal with problems such
as stress, mental disorders etc. therapists can be people with titles like psychologists, social
workers, counsellors etc. As a therapist I play a very important role in the community helping
with counselling process as ell in the private mental systems (APA, n.d). My key role is to
help people deal with issues like stress, mental disorders and other issues that may lead to
this. Communities have people with different cultures, views and backgrounds and so it is my
role to understand each individual as and if it is group therapy to understand the culture and
their backgrounds to be able to effectively help them. It is my role to meet each individual’s
behavioural, cognitive and emotional struggles despite their culture or ethnicity (Lerner,
2006).
According to Gerald and Gerald (2005) it is my role as therapist to respect the client
in my case the community as whole including the people with mental disorders in the private
mental health systems and the individual members of the community regardless of their
behaviour as they have to me for help and they deserve to be treated as people worthy of the
help. Through my work as a community therapist I have come to realise that each community
has different view and values from myself, it is however my role not to impose my beliefs
