Delegation is the act of assigning a task or a responsibility from one person to another,
most of the times from a manager to subordinate. It is an essential management skill in any
organization since it reduces the workload on one side as well as sharpening skills of the
employees. When the manager delegates tasks to employees, they feel that the manager respects
their abilities and feel trusted (Harrison & Lock, 2004). As a result, they become more
committed to the organization and hence improved productivity. However, some managers tend
to believe that if they do the task themselves, they will do it better than if given to someone else
to do it and are afraid they won’t get the expected results when they delegate or the task won’t be
accomplished within the deadlines. This is only a misconception and the expected results can be
obtained in time if delegation is done effectively.
For delegation to be effective, as the manager, you need to carefully choose the task to
delegate. Of course as the senior you cannot just give out all your work to employees, you should
