Allison Schmitendorf English 101 Essay 2: Constructing an Argument Whether we realize it or not, we navigate every day through the construction of arguments. Should I wake up to my alarm or snooze for an extra ten minutes? Should I watch another episode of Game of Thrones or start writing my essay due for English 101? While these issues may seem largely insignificant, the side toward which we persuade ourselves could prove quite consequential in the end. For our second essay, I want you to construct an argument directed toward an issue of importance or interest to you and persuade your audience to agree. While brainstorming your topic, consider issues that you encounter daily or topics that you have genuine interest in. These issues can be as minor or as major as you wish. For example, you could persuade your reader that drinking hot chocolate in the morning is a better alternative than coffee. Or you could consider looking at issues in popular culture-perhaps you believe that, yes, Kanye was right, and Beyoncé really did have the greatest music video of all time. Or perhaps you'd like to argue that it is vital that a bill be introduced in congress to solve an issue near and dear to you. Ultimately, you may argue whatever you wish. The only topics that are off limits are larger current controversies (including, but not limited to, gun control, abortion, illegal immigration, global warming, recreational marijuana and so forth). Entire books have been written on these topics, and a nation-wide consensus has still not been reached. You would not be able to effectively argue your side within the span of a 4-5 page paper. The best argumentative papers acknowledge the opposition through the presentation of counterarguments. What would those who would not agree with you argue for their side? Not only does this acknowledgement prove that you examined all sides of an issue, but it also allows you to combat the opposition's potential objections before they can make them. For this reason, you will be required to present at least one counterargument in your paper, but you are welcome (and even encouraged) to present more. Moreover, with this in mind, it is important to make sure that your thesis is, indeed, arguable. While you might really want to talk about how cell phones going off in class are a distraction or that diet and exercise are they key to a healthy lifestyle, no one is really going fight you on these issues. There must be a large number of people who could and would disagree with you. While I am not requiring the use of outside sources for this particular assignment, I encourage you to use them as you feel necessary. If you choose to use outside sources, make sure to use proper MLA citation format, including both a work cited page and in-text parenthetical citation. Please see me if you have any questions. Requirements: MLA format 12-point, Times New Roman Font A clear, identifiable thesis statement At least one counterargument 4-5 pages ( 1014 Two copies of completed rough draft due for peer review: Final draft due:

Socialization and Online Games
Many people perceive online games as the diversion of attention and as a form of personal
entertainment. However, these games are unique means of meeting different people from various
walks of life. Millions of gamers demonstrate that playing online is a way of making friendship
and networking, as players concentrate on teamwork. The team works end up as a friendship
between like-minded people who form relationships. These online games have proved to be the
newest form of socialization and creating relationships from many places in the world.
An example of an online game is Massive- Multiplayer Online Game, which involves
millions of players that interact in the same environment. This kind of a game has social
characteristics because it allows the players to merge and complete a common mission based on
their skills, and by fighting among themselves. As the game begins, the players create fictional
characters and customize their physical features. Since most online games involve the combat
mission, the players fit their characters with weapons and armors. Other games involve the act of
healing the wounded characters in the mission, and they may spend many hours striving to achieve
the set targets of the mission (Steinkuehler 28). After the creation of the characters, the players are
now allowed...
